The Detention Facility is located at 2340 Mullan Road. These positions include cooking, cleaning, laundry services, working in the library and floor maintenance. There are also several jobs within the jail that inmates perform for a minimal wage. The Missoula County Sheriff and Undersheriff oversee and manage all divisions within the Sheriff’s Department. The Detention Facility is a division of the Missoula County Sheriff’s Department and is headed by a Commander and an Assistant Commander and requires nearly 120 total staff to operate. We have visiting areas for families, friends and attorneys. MCDF operates a kitchen that serves approximately 1,100 nutritious meals a day. MCDF operates similar to a self-contained town, with a clinic, library, school, counselors, dentist, phone system, commissary (store), banking, housing, religious services, courts and a staff that provides maintenance and security functions. The facility has three main components: a juvenile detention facility, a county adult detention facility and a contracted community corrections facility (MASC). 1, 1999, replacing the overcrowded and outdated facility on the fourth floor of the courthouse annex. Depending on your interest in this sort of thing you could spend anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours here wandering around and checking things out.The Missoula County Detention Facility (MCDF) opened on Nov. There is not a gift shop or anything, but they do have hand outs for self guided tours and free postcards. There are outhouses in the parking lots, but no hand sanitizer. This is a decent amount of walking on dirt paths, but it still pretty easy. Dog's are allowed on leash, we saw many people with pets. ![]() There is a $3.00 (cash/check) charge per person, there is no way to make change and is all done on the honor system. This being said, I advise 10/10 do not take a car on this road any time of year, you can get there by going further up I-90 and taking 200, it is a much nicer road that cars can easily go on. If coming in off of I-90 using the I-90 frontage road please note, this slowly turns into a rough, windy long mountain drive that requires a 4x4, even then hold on to your seat! This drive was very pretty (minus passing a few homes that looked like the hills have eyes, but we did not hear banjo's) the weather was great in June. It's often too rough for some cars and for trailers. Oh, even though the road goes on through to I-90, we returned the way we'd come on the advice of a forest employee. We spent over a hour wandering around the streets and over the hillsides, peering at crumbling wallpaper, and enjoying a beautiful fall day. My favorite aspect was the superb job that’s been done in retelling the story with detailed historical information on who owned, who bought, or how a building had been used. A number of the original buildings had burned in a fire, but there’s plenty to see. The parking lot already had several cars, but there was no one else in the lot for RVs and trailers.Ī clear path lead down the slope to the remains of the town, once home to over 1000 people (and 13 saloons!). Well, 3 miles down the road the pavement ended, but recent rain had knocked down the dust so on we went towing our small camper. Why not? The road was paved, the day was mostly sunny if cool. On a trip to Montana in late September, we were driving along hwy 200 when we saw the sign for Garnet Ghost Town. ![]()
